Fav(orite) style of writing?
I got a lot of writing questions this round, so I’m happy to explain a little bit of my writing process for you. For those of you who don’t know, I love to write! It’s one of my main hobbies. Most of the writing I’m actually proud of I’ll post in the “writings” tag on this blog, but some of my older stuff is on Wattpad. My username is isabelrocks13518.
Ok, back to the question. My favorite style of writing is obviously narrative. I also enjoy a good persuasive essay but I am always a sucker for a story. There’s just something magical about reading words on a page and being transported to a whole new world.
How do you start a character?
Starting a character in a story is always a fun but challenging process. Personally, I recommend taking a step back and looking at what your story needs. What kind of protagonist will solve the conflict of the story? Then I like to actually pull from personalities, looks, characteristics, etc. of people I know. It’s easiest to write about something you are comfortable with and familiar with in your life. Then you can get to the fun stuff like names (which should be appropriate to your genre/setting), looks, flaws, relationships with other characters, and more.
What’s the best way to develop a character?
Hmmm. This question kind of depends on the particular story you’re writing. You can first pick if you want to have a round or flat character, simply meaning if you want them to develop at all. If you choose to have them develop, you can use your conflict to do so. After they solve the conflict, what changes about them? Looks? Personality? Their thought processes? There’s so many aspects of a character you can choose to develop. As well, you can use their background to develop. For example, if they were a stubborn character before the story, and then something changes and they have a new perspective on their background, maybe they’re not stubborn anymore. There’s so much you can tweak in a character to have them develop, and I don’t think there’s any “best” way to do so. As long as that development is visible, I think it’ll make an entertaining story.
Favorite movie?
My favorite movie is Back to the Future. Why? Oh, boy I would probably take a whole blog post talking about this movie (maybe I will!) but simply put, the climax of the movie gets me every time. It’s like, everything that could go wrong does go wrong and somehow it still turns out fine. The characters and the plotline are so funny and loveable, too. And for your information, I prefer the first movie, but BTTF 2 is just as good. I also like the 3rd one although most people don’t.
What was one day this semester that made you just feel super happy and content?
One moment that stood out (I’m going to go with the Fall 2019 semester) was when I was spending my Saturday with my friends. We had a good time before that, and the sun was beginning to go down. We wanted to just relax for a bit so we decided to sit out on the Landis Green field in the middle of campus. I remember stepping out of the dorm with my new friends, the breeze hit me just right, and I was overwhelmed with joy. It was everything I expected college to be: happy. But it got so much better. When we were sitting on the grass and talking about life, we heard a college student walking around with a guitar. He was singing in the distance and eventually was about to pass us. I asked my friend to call him over, somewhat as a joke, but she actually did it. She asked him to come to play for us, and he did! We spent the next couple hours listening to this boy sing and play guitar, and let me tell, it was amazing. Our own private concert and I know I could sit in that moment for eternity just listening to him play. And for the cherry on top of that perfect day, we all went and saw Star Wars in the student cinema that night with my friends and guitar boy.
